Abstract
A total of 86 children with congenital heart disease under 16 years of age were observed at the department of pediatrics, St. Mary¢¥s Hospital and St. Paul¢¥s Hospital, from Jan . 1985 to Dec. 1985.
The results were as follows;
1. The proportion of male was 44.200 and that of female was 55.8%. The ratio of male to female was 1 : 1.3.
2. As studied by cardiac catheterization, cardiac angiography. and surgery, 50% of the patients observed was under 6 years of age.
3. In the type of congenital heart disease, acyanotic group was 75. 6% and cyanotic one was 24.4¡Æx. Acyanotic group is about 3 times as many as cyanotic one.
4. The incidence of each individual type of congenital heart disease is shown in Table 4. Apart from these, the largest group was isolated ventricular septal defect, 37.2%, and the others were ventricular septal defect associated with other cardiac lesion, 8.2%; followed by patent ductus arteriosus, 18.6%; tetralogy of Follot, 17.4%; atrial septal defect (secundu-n type), 7.0%;pulmonary stenosis, 2.3¡Æ0. These 5 malformations are responsible for 90.7¢¥% - of the total, but many less common ones have been listed.
5. The incidence of ventricular septal ¢¥defect associated with other cardiac lesion and integral part of some complex lesions was 66.,3% of the total. The most common cardiac anomalies associated with ventricular septal defect was tetralogy of Follot.
6. The operation mortality of all 86 children was 3.5%.
